Net Zero

Many schools and academy trust have set Net Zero destinations, but the journey there is not always clear. We provide a range of sustainability solutions to guide you with setting strategies to accelerate decarbonisation initiatives.

PUTTING DECARBONISTION IN ACTION

Creating a greener future starts in our schools - and decarbonisation plays a crucial role in that journey. With the UK committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, schools and academies have a unique opportunity to lead by example, transforming their estates into sustainable, energy-efficient environments that benefit both people and planet.

As schools strive to become more sustainable, the journey to Net Zero presents opportunities and challenges. For school business managers, balancing environmental goals with financial realities, operational demands, and educational priorities is no small task. School estates are complex live environments, and busy term times provide short windows to make assessments and upgrades.

From the high upfront costs of green technologies to the limitations of aging infrastructure, implementing decarbonisation strategies requires careful planning and collaboration. Engaging staff, students, and the wider community is essential, as is navigating evolving regulations and tracking progress through reliable data.

HOW RLB CAN HELP

Our specialist team will work with you to understand your sustainability drivers and goals. We can develop strategies and initiatives that deliver value across environment, social and governance (ESG) pillars - at asset, trust and community levels.

As net zero milestones move closer, schools and trusts need to put plans into action. Our team of RICS chartered surveyors includes PAS2035 compliant retrofit specialists, who can provide decarbonisation solutions at portfolio scale (fabric upgrades, LED lighting, ASHP installations, Photo Voltaic panels etc).

We also excel in helping schools and trusts secure grants allocations through the Low Carbon Skills Fund (LCSF) and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) so they can invest in clean energy sources, such as heat pumps, and equip estates management team with green skills to guide you along your sustainability journey.

SOLUTIONS IN ACTION

The Elliot Foundation Academy Trust (TEFAT)

Following the completion of a decarbonisation feasibility study and report, we helped TEFAT successful secure investment towards the installation of decarbonisation solutions.

The funded scheme will include design for both fabric and MEP services, including Air Source Heat Pumps and PV systems, which will support the Trust's ambition to reduce its carbon emissions.

Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust (BDAT)

We created a decarbonisation strategy for BDAT that involved fabric and services surveys, alongside a review of energy usage, to create a set of costed recommendations.

This strategy enabled the Trust to prioritise its funding applications, ensure that maintenance and related minor works projects were completed, and position it to apply for future funding through Salix.
