Estate management

A well-managed school estate lays the foundation for successful teaching, learning, and community engagement. We can help you to optimise your assets and estate throughout the life cycle so you can meet your education ambitions.

FROM GOOD TO GREAT

Good estate management in schools and academies is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about creating environments that are safe, sustainable, inspiring, and responsive to the evolving needs of pupils, staff, and local communities.

However, achieving this aim comes with its challenges. From navigating tight budgets and aging infrastructure to ensuring compliance with ever-evolving regulations, the path to effective estate management is complex. Balancing diverse needs, planning for the future, and embedding sustainability into every decision are some of the hurdles faced.

Schools and academy trusts need to consider how they effectively manage their premises, buildings and overall estate. By gaining a full understanding of current management approaches, you can identify changes that will improve processes, increase skills through training, take stock of the buildings condition to schedule maintenance repairs and replacements.

HOW RLB CAN HELP

Our multidisciplinary team has the expertise to survey, develop, improve and enhance your estate and help you set long-term strategies. Using key project drivers and success criteria, we can ensure best value by working closely with your estates and facilities teams to achieve best results.

Many trusts can find it challenging to prioritise estate projects. By capturing asset data, and understanding the analytical insights, we can bring clarity to the management of planned maintenance, asset life cycles, energy usage, technical due diligence and statutory compliance to optimise expenditure and estate performance.

Drawing our extensive delivery work for the DfE’s CDC programme, we have developed reporting solutions that use standard digital platforms to provide rich data about the condition and efficiency of your school estate. This data can be reviewed and understood by a wide range of stakeholders to enable better intelligent and informed decision making.

SOLUTIONS IN ACTION

Girls Day School Trust (GDST)

RLB has supported GDST through its Building Surveying and Cost Management frameworks since 2015.

Having completed over 100 schemes across the country, projects have included building refurbishments, roof replacements and extensions, new buildings and specialist facilities for catering, performing arts, fitness and laboratories.

Harris Federation

We delivered condition surveys for 20 buildings during school holidays, to support the creation of planned preventative maintenance schedules.

The data enabled Harris Federation to understand the condition of the school site and forecast capital expenditure over a 10 year period.

Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust (BKCAT)

We provided pre-acquisition surveys, reporting and advice about three schools in advance of their move into the BKCAT multi-academy trust. We supported the Trust with the Local Authority and Diocese throughout the acquisition process.

Condition Data Collection Programme

RLB is currently helping to deliver the Condition Data Collection programme, which will enable the Department for Education (DfE) to prioritise future funding to maintain and improve the condition of 22,500 nursery, primary and secondary schools.
