Our commitment

Our commitment to making progress on the gender pay gap

Our values – Truth, Trust, Together, Tomorrow – underpin our commitment to making progress happen. We believe that when we bring together the right people doing things the right way, we make progress for our clients, communities and colleagues.

To meet our commitment to closing the gender pay gap and rewarding people fairly, we will drive improvements through:

Building an inclusive workplace

Overcoming bias in the construction and property management industry by recruiting, developing and promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Supporting our local communities

Supporting the communities in which we live and work by attracting and retaining a workforce that is representative of these communities.

Investing in our people's development

Ensuring everyone is equipped with the skills they need to excel, encouraged to reach their full potential, and feels able to bring their whole professional self to work.

Fairness, transparency and opportunity for all

By ensuring fairness, transparency and opportunity for all in everything we do, we are building a business fit for the future.

Our new diversity, equity and inclusion strategy is designed to make a positive difference to all our stakeholders. It recognises that each person has different circumstances and will help us allocate the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome for all individuals and groups.

We are working to improve our business in relation to the nine protected characteristics: gender, gender reassignment, age, race, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity.

Our efforts to improve the recruitment of females and the diversity of candidate shortlists for all roles are now making a difference with a year-on-year increase achieved in the number of female future professionals joining us. We are committed to transparency in the pathways to professional development and providing skills maps and frameworks for all roles.

By engaging in an annual external salary review, which examines the alignment of salary bandings and ranges across the built environment sector, we are confident that men and women at RLB receive appropriate competitive pay for the roles they perform.

Our internal annual salary review process includes a rigorous review of pay across the business and gives assurance that RLB provides equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender. The rigour we apply to our reward decision-making process has resulted in a slight increase in the average salary of our female employees.

Breaking down barriers to careers in construction

We engage with secondary schools and colleges across the UK to promote careers in construction to all. We are also working to recruit under-represented groups into the construction industry through our Bucknall’s First Rung initiative. The aim of this programme is to support the career development of young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds who are or are at risk of being considered as Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).

Another initiative, now in its seventh year, is the David Bucknall Scholarship, which widens access to careers in construction by providing financial support to undergraduate students studying a built environment subject at Birmingham City University.

Through our Future Professionals programme, a blended programme of learning and training, RLB helps students, apprentices and graduates establish careers in construction and the number of participants in the programme increased by 12.5% in 2023/24.
