Our Commitment
Our commitment to equality and rewarding people fairly
Promoting diversity and inclusion sits at the core of our values, how we conduct everyday business, and our long-term growth strategy. We believe it’s simply the right thing to do.

Diverse Workforce
We are recruiting, retaining and developing a diverse workforce that is representative of our local communities.

Inclusive Workplace
We are building an inclusive workplace culture where every employee feels able to bring their whole self to work.

Investing in People
We are investing in our people to promote equality and provide opportunities for everyone to achieve success.
Fairness, transparency and opportunity for all
Our diversity and inclusion strategy is designed to make a positive difference, not just to our colleagues but to our clients, stakeholders and communities. We are implementing measures to improve our business in relation to the nine protected characteristics: gender, gender reassignment, age, race, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity.
We can see our focused activities on the recruitment of females and the diversity of candidate shortlists for all roles are now making a difference with a year-on-year increase being achieved in the number of female new hires.
We are committed to transparency in the pathways to professional development and promotion, and provide skills maps and frameworks for all roles.
By engaging in an annual external salary review across industry, which examines the alignment of salary bandings and ranges, we are confident that men and women receive appropriate competitive pay for roles performed. Our annual internal salary review process includes rigorous review of pay across the business and also concludes that RLB provides equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender.
Breaking down barriers to careers in construction
We engage with secondary schools and colleges across the UK to promote careers in construction to all.
RLB is working to recruit under-represented groups into the construction industry through the Bucknall’s First Rung initiative. The aim of this programme is to support the career development of young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds who are or are at risk of being considered as Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET).
Another initiative, now in its sixth year, is the David Bucknall Scholarship, which widens access to careers in construction by providing financial support to undergraduate students studying a built environment subject at Birmingham City University.
Our Future Professionals Programme, a blended programme of learning and training, helps students, apprentices and graduates establish careers in construction and the number of participants increased by 50% in 2022/23.
