Collaborative approach will reduce perceived risks of stadium contracts

The development of elite sporting facilities continues to gain volume and prominence within the sport sector. The recent completion of projects such as Everton Stadium, and the proposed redevelopments of Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge, are driving an increased level of activity in the sector.

Stadium and arena projects are gaining a reputation within the contracting market as difficult and high-risk contracts, which is leading to a reduction in contractor appetite despite large contract values and high outturns. More and more, clients are approaching contracts in a collaborative manner to reduce the perceived risk felt by contractors, which is to the benefit of all involved.

Looking ahead, the level of construction activity in the sector looks strong and is gaining in traction bolstered by several new schemes for elite training campuses. The refurbishment and decarbonisation of leisure stock is continuing as a key trend among local authorities.

Within the events subsector, all eyes will be on Glasgow and the city’s approach to the delivery of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Following a mixed output of the event delivery model at Paris 2024, it will be a key test of the continuation of this approach.

The project – part refurbishment and part new-build – will transform the leisure centre into the Goole Hub, a multi-service centre providing a range of services for the local community.

The new building’s facilities will include an improved gym, a learner pool, a state-of-the-art six-lane bowling alley, and the town’s library.
